chess game cosplay panel

Postby chessimprov » Tue Jul 08, 2008 12:11 am

How many people would be interested in participating in a chess panel if I were to do one? We'd need about 34 people- 2 players to make commands and everyone else for volunteering as a piece or pawn. The time it took would depend on how long the two opposing players played. We may pick people at random from a box to choose who is what including who plays versus who, or the staff may decide on a different procedure. Maybe some guys would not want to be the queen or would be, I don't know, lol.

P.S. I blame Tim for me coming up with this posted request! haha.

P.S.2. Oops, please move to the Panel section. Thank you!

Depends on when you do it, and if I can be a player =P. (Lol I tried, I like to be random like that) It would be nice to have a cosplay chess match, just got to make sure you can round up your players and pieces ahead of time and make sure they are given instructions or else it might be chaos (no offense, just saying from experience) :D. I'm all for this!

We talked about this before and not sure if we can do it based on space and time (even though I /like/ the idea). Sounds like you'd need the main events room for this panel, right?

If you can't do it this year you can always use this to generate an interest for next year, see how much of a response you get for interest this time and use it to have it for next year. Just a thought!

I don't know where I'll be in 2010 I can tell you that much. I'm well grounded in competitive chess and that is why Tim suggested me. I am not the best at technical rules with the clock, but that will not affect this panel. I'd still need a lot of help with where to get a gigantic board and rules and such if I am around 2010 and we do this, etc.

Scrabble could also be a possibility with me, but that is much harder to do cause you need a huge board with the right symbols on it and probably 103 people at least to do it right (100 for each possible letter, 2 minimum for the players, 1 for judge and scorer, etc.) lol.

I really like this idea, to the point I am wondering if there is another way/place it could be done, like in an empty area outside or something if it is a nice day.

Here is one place to buy a mat. Looks like they are a little bit pricey: http://www.flaghouse.com/itemdy00.asp?T ... ode=117242

Quite pricy indeed. I can't think of any empty areas outside the Scanticon other than the parking lot..and I kinda doubt the Scanticon will let us section off their parking lot when they usually have several conferences going on at the same time. Also we cant afford to rent out more rooms (we're actually taking up most every room thats useable and available in the Scanticon) this year.I really think this idea is best looked into more thoroughly for next year. Unless you think you could fit such a human chess panel into a panel room that's 520 square feet and can fit up to 30 chairs arranged in a theater style (the Scanticon doesn't have numbers about max numbers of people per room).

I can promise you guys that the list of panels, and the schedule as it is right now is so cram packed with stuff you won't be bored!

Cosplay Chess is one of the more popular events in larger cons. From reading different forums, cosplay chess requires a bit of room, and quite a bit of organization. I do know that in general, you won't have a problem finding pieces. Most chess matches are themed every year, and for the most part, you'll find such a wide variety of cosplayers out there you won't have a problem finding costumes to match your theme. It's a popular idea that i know would help make Zenkaikon more fun in future years. I'd definitely bank this idea in the "Let's wait till Zenkaikon gets bigger" file.

In terms of room size, seeing from videos and stuff, you'd probably require a room that is at least the same size as the current Main Events room, probably a little bigger. You have the "board," which can't be too crammed or else the "pieces" will have a hard time getting around. And you need room for the audience as well. When Zenkaikon can procure more space (either rent another floor from the scanticon or move to a bigger venue) this idea will take off i'm sure.

Yeah I definitely think it is a great idea for next year, since it looks like it might not work out for this year. As for the board, rather than spend 50 bucks you could probably make your own board with a little time...maybe using carpet remnants or pieces of cloth sewn together from a craft store. As for pieces, you could probably make signs on cardboard for people to wear around their necks in two different colors stating what piece they are. I definitely think you won't have trouble finding interest. It sounds like a lot of fun! I would be happy to moderate or help out (provided I wasn't occupied with other work at the time ;)).
